Synod of Alaska-Northwest

Edith and Jarvis Morris Evangelism Memorial Fund | 102240005574

To utilize and/or allocate the income for one or more of the following purposes: A. The training and equipping of pastors and lay persons for the ministry of evangelism in and through the presbyteries and congregations at the discretion of presbyteries. B. The support of special evangelism projects in the presbyteries and with congregations at the directive of presbyteries. C. The provision of one or more part-time evangelism trainers by the Synod to work directly with presbyteries and congregations in the planning and implementation of evangelism. The Synod is not authorized under any circumstances to use or borrow income from the Fund for purposes other than the general purpose for which the Fund was established. A careful student of history and an experienced pastor, presbyter and administrator, Jarvis Morris recognizes that changing times call for evolving processes, and Edith Morris shares fully in this perception. They do not wish to dictate practices which in future years might mitigate against the basic intent of the gift, namely to help promote and encourage evangelism within the bounds of the Synod of Alaska-Northwest. Additionally, the donors affirm the responsibility of the Synod to make final decisions in the administration of the income from the Fund, in accordance with the general intent of the donors. However, at the time of the gift the donors consider the following process to be in harmony with their wishes and highly appropriate to the administration of the income generated by this permanent fund. They commend this process as one worthy of careful review by the Synod, now and in years to come. A. The Life and Mission Division, or its successor, of the Synod has responsibility for making known the availability of these funds and for encouraging proposals. B. Proposals for funding may be made either by any church within the Synod, or by a duly constituted committee of any presbytery of the Synod, or by any Presbyterian institution located within the bounds of the Synod. C. Proposals are submitted to the Life and Mission Division of the Synod of Alaska-Northwest, in accordance with an announced timetable. The Division has the responsibility of determining the allocation of funds, in total or partial support of one or more proposals. D. Typically grants are made to fund projects for no longer than a one-year period. However, in unusual circumstances, that is, when special needs or opportunities present themselves, the same project can be funded for one or more additional years, upon submission of a new or updated proposal to be reviewed de novo by the Life and Mission Division of the Synod. Nonetheless, it is the express wish of the donors that the income from this permanent fund be used to support fresh ideas and opportunities, and not as a source of financial support for ongoing projects of congregations, committees, institutions, presbyteries or of the Synod. E. Upon completion of the project for which the grant was allocated, or one year from the award of funds, which ever shall come first, the church, committee or institution which received the funds shall submit a written report to the Life and Mission Division, accounting for expenditures and, so far as can be reasonably assayed, offering an assessment of the outcome of the undertaking or effort which was funded. If the Life and Mission Division itself manages the project, then that Division is to submit a similar written report to the Synod. F. At the discretion of the Life and Mission Division, any funds which have been allocated for use but are not expended or encumbered by the end of the grant period may be used to continue the project for which the grant was awarded or are to be returned to the Division for future allocation. G. The Life and Mission Division is not obliged to expend or allocate all funds within the year of availability, and unexpended funds may be held for use in another year. H. Projects receiving financial support from this Fund are free to receive funds from other sources. Further, any persons, churches or organizations may add to the corpus of this Evangelism Fund, and in fact are encouraged to do so.
