Theological Education Fund of the Church of Christ in Thailand | 103120057863

The net income therefrom shall be used in quarterly payments as it is received to provide scholarships at Princeton Theological Seminary of Princeton, New Jersey, for the education of Thai nationals who are resident within the Kingdom of Thailand by bringing such students to Princeton Theological Seminary under the terms and conditions as outlined in paragraphs that follow. (a) The purpose of this scholarship program is to increase the opportunities for Thai nationals who are students or teachers of theology in Thailand to continue their theological studies or related research at Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey. Pastors of local churches in the Church of Christ in Thailand are also included in the purpose of this scholarship program, as are chaplains in the schools and hospitals of the Church of Christ in Thailand, and persons working in special fields or on a particular projects of the Church of Christ in Thailand, such as the production of Christian literature in the Thai language, evangelism in the urban environment, scheduled Bible and religious teaching in the schools of the Church of Christ in Thailand, and other such work in the Church of Christ in Thailand. Following the death of the survivor of the Donors, the Foundation agrees to provide a copy of this agreement to the Church of Christ in Thailand. (b) Candidates for scholarship grants may be either men or women. They shall be between twenty (20) and forty-five (45) years of age at the time the initial scholarship from this Trust is granted. (i) Candidates shall be nominated in writing to the appropriate General Assembly Agency, Council, or Board of the Presbyterian Church (USA) by the General Assembly or the General Council of the Church of Christ in Thailand. The appropriate General Assembly Agency, Council, or Board of the Presbyterian Church (USA) has sole authority to make the scholarship grant to the candidate of its choice, provided only that the candidate was first nominated in writing by the General Assembly or the General Council of the Church of Christ in Thailand and is acceptable to Princeton Theological Seminary as outlined below. (ii) Candidates shall have earned a bachelor's degree, or its equivalent, in Thailand, or elsewhere. Candidates must be accepted by Princeton Theological Seminary as bona fide candidates for degrees, or for programs of study or research for which Princeton Theological Seminary gives credit toward a degree. (iii) Candidates shall be of Thai nationality, resident within the Kingdom of Thailand. Candidates shall be members in good standing of a local church of the Church of Christ in Thailand, and shall have the written approval and confidence of both the local church to which they belong and the Church of Christ in Thailand. (iv) A scholarship grant to a recipient may be for one year, or for two, three, or four consecutive years, but not for more than four consecutive years. (v) The income from the Trust shall be used to provide a grant to cover transportation expenses for one round-trip from Thailand to the United States. It shall cover tuition or research expenses as required by Princeton Theological Seminary and it shall provide a reasonable amount for living expenses. The appropriate General Assembly Agency, Council, or Board of the Presbyterian Church (USA) shall have sole authority to determine the exact amount of the grant. (vi) If, in the opinion of the appropriate General Assembly Agency, Council, or Board of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and with written approval of the General Council of the Church of Christ in Thailand, it should appear to be wise for the candidate's spouse, or spouse and children, to be with the candidate in the United States, provided only that no more than two children may be covered by this provision, the appropriate General Assembly Agency, Council, or Board of the Presbyterian Church (USA) is authorized to make travel funds available on the basis of one round-trip from Thailand to the United States per person, plus a reasonable amount for living expenses. The appropriate General Assembly Agency, Council, or Board of the Presbyterian Church (USA) has sole authority to determine the amount of these grants. (vii) It is the intention of this scholarship grant that the study program at Princeton Theological Seminary focus on the disciplines included in a core curriculum, such as Biblical studies, Biblical history, New Testament, Old Testament, theology, church history, pastoral theology, Hebrew and Greek. Because the requirements for different degree programs, and for various ministries in the Church of Christ in Thailand, vary, it will be necessary for some students to limit the number of areas of their concentration. In all cases, it is the intention that the traditional theological seminary disciplines be those which are emphasized. (viii) Candidates must declare in writing their firm intention to work in, with and for the Church of Christ in Thailand upon completion of their course of study, and this declaration shall be endorsed in writing by the General Council of the Church of Christ in Thailand, as pastors of local churches, or as teachers in a seminary, faculty of theology, or Bible school of the Church of Christ in Thailand, or as teachers in the schools of the Church, or as chaplains in the schools or hospitals of the Church, or in a department or project of the Church, or in some particular task assigned by the Church, such as, but not limited to, Bible translation or revision. (c) In the event, for whatever reason, it should become impossible to carry out this program in Thailand, the Donors desire that the appropriate General Assembly Agency, Council, or Board carry out this program, or a program nearly similar as may be practical, in some other country of the world, preferably in Asia, where the Presbyterian Church (USA) has historic commitments. (i) Should Princeton Theological Seminary be merged or consolidated with any other institution related to the Presbyterian Church (USA), the net income from this gift shall be used for a similar scholarship program at the said merged church-related seminary which shall be entitled to receive the benefits of this gift under the terms of this Agreement and shall be obligated to administer the same in all respects and in accordance with other terms of this Agreement. (ii) In the event that Princeton Theological Seminary or its successors cease to exist or cease to be a part of or officially connected with the Presbyterian Church (USA), or should Princeton Seminary cease to function, for whatever reason, or lose its character as a seminary in the Reformed tradition, the appropriate General Assembly Agency, Council or Board of the Presbyterian Church (USA) is authorized to carry out this program in cooperation with any seminary which, in their opinion, will best serve the purposes of this scholarship program. (iii) In the remote circumstance that the annual income produced by the Trust is more than enough to support two scholarship grants per year, the excess beyond the cost of the two scholarships is to be given to the Church of Christ in Thailand, to be used for theological education in Thailand, the General Assembly or the General Council of the Church of Christ in Thailand having sole authority to determine the particulars of such distribution and program, if any.
