To provide scholarships for deserving ministerial students attending said [Union] Seminary. Said scholarship shall be in the nature of outright gifts to the recipients and shall not be repaid to the fund. It is further my will and desire that deserving students from Rowan County, North Carolina, be given first preference of scholarships from the income of the fund, and that secondary preference shall be given to deserving students from elsewhere throughout the State of North Carolina.

for the purpose of funding, in whole or in part, a faculty position in church history at the Seminary to be known as the E. T. Thompson Chair of Church History, and further on the condition that to the extent such funds in any fiscal year exceed the costs for that year and the next succeeding year for the faculty position to be funded, the Seminary shall apply such excess to support the general academic program of the Seminary.

While this gift is unrestricted and the Board of Trustees or other governing body of Union Theological Seminary may use and expend these funds in any manner it deems appropriate, the Donors would prefer that the money be spent for St. Andrew Presbytery for candidates for the Gospel Ministry under the care of St. Andrew Presbytery and/or candidates for the Ministry from Belhaven College and/or candidates for the Ministry from Rhodes College. This gift is made in appreciation of the financial help given the Donor by Mr. F. S. Royster who established the Royster Chair of Christian Mission at Union Theological Seminary.
