Sheriff Harvey Moss Odell Memorial Scholarship Fund 1988 | 102240005317

To be used for underwriting scholarships for young people of Trinity Presbyterian Church as outlined in Appendix A. APPENDIX A - This scholarship is given to the glory of God and in memory of ex-Sheriff Harvey Moss Odell of San Joaquin County and is to be known as the Sheriff Harvey Moss Odell Memorial Scholarship. Harvey Moss Odell was the son of Dr. Thomas Harvey Odell and the former Mary Belle Moss. His mother, Mary Belle, was the daughter of Captain William S. Moss who once owned the land upon which Trinity Presbyterian Church is now situated. Harvey Moss Odell was born near Lathrop, CA, in 1883. He was a dry land farmer and farmed and lived most of his adult life on the property east of Trinity Presbyterian Church between Interstate 5 and El Dorado Street north of the Homestead Canal. He held the office of Public Administrator of San Joaquin County from 1919 to 1923 and the office of Sheriff of San Joaquin County from 1931 to 1939. Harvey Moss Odell was elected Sheriff on a platform that he would impartially enforce all the laws and that he would eliminate gambling resorts and bootlegging joints that were rampant in the county at that time and clearly against the law. Sheriff Odell died in Stockton in 1951 and is buried in the Stockton Rural Cemetery in the family plot. The application form for the Sheriff Harvey Moss Odell Memorial Scholarship must contain the above biography to identify the inspiration of the endowment. To be eligible for the scholarship, an applicant must be a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church or its successor and also must be a resident of San Joaquin County or have a parent/parents who fulfill both of the above stipulations. The applicant must be accepted by the school he/she plans to attend. The scholarship money is not to be given to the recipient, but is to be paid directly to the college, junior college, university or trade school that has accepted the applicant. The scholarship normally shall be awarded annually. There could be more than one scholarship. Normally the award may be received only once, although individuals may apply more than once. However, if there are no qualified candidates and/or if there is an extraordinary need, then a recipient may receive the scholarship more than once. Interest only shall be awarded with the principal to remain intact. If Trinity Presbyterian Church is disbanded, then its successor or the Presbytery of Stockton, if there is no successor, shall select the scholarship person(s) fulfilling the scholarship dictates as outlined above. The Session of Trinity Presbyterian Church of the Presbyterian Church (USA), whose present address is 1002 West 8th Street, Stockton, CA is to select the scholarship person(s). The Session is also to set the qualifications. Serious consideration should be given to the following: service to God, service to one's community, character, integrity, financial need, motivation and academic performance. But not necessarily in this sequence nor limited to these categories. And now, Oh God, receive this Memorial Scholarship and grant that the recipients may ever be aware of Thy accompanying Presence. So be it.
