to the Board of Trustees of Montreat-Anderson College, and the Trustees shall devote the entire net income to the education of youth, preferably the youth of western North Carolina, by providing scholarships at Montreat-Anderson College to be known as the S.W. Newell Scholarships. The scholarships shall be in such amounts and to such recipients as may be selected by the Trustees of the College. In awarding these scholarships particular attention shall be paid to academic standing, character, leadership, ambition, and financial need. It is my desire and hope that preference be given to applicants who express an intention to devote themselves to full time Christian Service upon completion of their education. The recipients of the scholarships shall be selected by the Trustees of Montreat-Anderson College in their sole discretion, and the number and value of the scholarships, which may be changed from time to time, shall be in the sole and uncontrolled discretion of said Trustees. If the Trustees of Montreat-Anderson College in their discretion so determine, the assistance provided may be by loans rather than scholarships, said loans to be upon such terms and conditions as shall be fixed by said Trustees in their discretion, and the Trustees are authorized to enforce, cancel or compromise collection of any such loans in their discretion. Note: Gifts made to this Fund are in honor of my [Samuel W. Newell] father, Reverend Samuel W. Newell, and mother, Margaret Scott Kimmons Newell, with an appreciation of the importance of Christina Higher education.
