Designated Use
1. That the said Trustees of the Theological Seminary of the Presbyterian Church, at Princeton, New Jersey shall first supplement the annual income on said sum of sixty thousand dollars ($60,000) by setting aside the sum of at least fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) of the undesignated contributions of the alumni to the Endowment and Enlargement Fund of said Seminary, and the total income on this one hundred and ten thousand dollars ($110,000) or more shall be used by said party of the second part [Seminary] for the purpose of establishing and maintaining a Chair of Christian Education. In consideration of this special grant of the income from funds provided by Mr. Thomas W. Synnott, the party of the second part [Seminary] pledges itself: a.To maintain such a Chair of Christian Education as a regular department of the Seminary's; b. To require that, before graduation, each regular student in the Seminary shall take such course or courses in the Department of Christian Education a course which shall in the number of hours required and in the character of the instruction given be equivalent to similar courses of Christian Education in other theological seminaries of equal grade. c. To require that the work done in the Department of Christian Education shall be of graduate grade, including seminars, and that the particular purpose of the Department, in addition to preparing pastors for leadership in the educational program of the churches, shall be to prepare students in the Department to become teachers of Christian Education in colleges, Directors or Religious Education in churches, or to undertake such Bible teaching work as is required of foreign missionaries. It is further agreed that if in the opinion of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, expressed in a proper resolution adopted by it, the income from said sixty thousand dollars ($60,000) shall at any time cease to be used in accordance with the terms of this agreement, than the principal of said sum shall revert, upon order of the General Assembly, to said Board of Christian Education of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America [NY], to become part of the Mary D. Synnott Fund for Religious Education held by said Board.1949 Additional language: 1. That the Seminary shall and will continue to maintain a Chair of Christian Education as a regular department of the Seminary in accordance with the standards and requirements set forth in the Agreement of October 14, 1930 as supplemented by the Agreement of May 15, 1933, but the Seminary shall no longer be required to set aside and maintain as a separate trust fund any assets whatsoever for the purpose of providing income for the maintenance of the aforesaid department, provided however, that the Seminary shall during each academic year spend in and for the maintenances of such department, in addition to any payments received from the Board for that purpose, a sum not less than the aggregate of any sum or sums paid unto the Seminary during the same academic year and representing income from the fund originally donated by Thomas W. Synnott to the Board for the maintenance of said Chair.
